Aristide Hotel

Description

The Hotel The Aristide is boutique hotel with nine double or twin suites. Three of the rooms have private terraces and stone plunge pools, five have sea views, all beds are king or super-king sized. The hotel has an award-winning rooftop restaurant with panoramic sea views, a bar, a tropical garden and an art gallery. Guests enter either through the tropical yard – one of the few green spaces on Syros – or through the lobby, which has Doric columns made from the same marble as the Acropolis. The lobby is sage-olive green with high ceilings and eye-catching chandeliers. In general, the lighting is a feature throughout the hotel. Guests then reach a spiral marble staircase that takes them to the first floor, where most of the rooms are in a circular arrangement around the exhibition space (where the resident artists exhibit their work). The rooms are spacious (average room size is 33sqm), and all except one have nearly five meter high ceilings. The idea was to keep the proportions of the house so that guests really feel that they are in a palatial mansion. Original features include the ceiling decorations, the old tiles, the doors and windows (the lobby, in particular, has five beautiful arched doors), the marble staircases and columns, the intricate metalwork of the staircase and the railings. The owners have also opted to not split the original rooms, so many of them have bathrooms that are the size of a room, with equally high ceilings and proper windows as the bedrooms. Room amenities include a full range of cosmetics (face cream, eye cream, tonic, mask, peeling, body lotion), hairdryer, hair straightener, room sound system, waterproof pool speakers, steamer, some of the rooms have both stone bath tubs and walk in rain showers, and all the rooms have Greek marble furniture, real plants and no single use plastics. Aristide Hotel was named ‘Best Boutique Hotel’ worldwide by National Geogaphic Traveller, one of the fifty best new hotels worldwide by Conde Nast Traveller, and has been featured regularly in most international media. Where is it? Aristide Hotel is in the historical centre of the capital of Ermoupolis, Syros. The area is called Vaporia. It’s about 5 – 7 minutes from the urban beach and 7-10 minutes from the main square. The architecture of the neighbourhood is neoclassical – a bit reminiscent of Venice. There’s a rare mix of urban culture (there’s a university, there are galleries and student bars), history (the architecture) and island life (sun & beach). The island never just feels touristy, as it has a stable population of around 30,000.

Δραστηριότητες

The hotel has a cocktail bar and a restaurant with an extensive Greek wine list. It organizes wine tastings and a country-side ‘picnics’ in the garden of a historical mansion. The concierge can assist guests with any activity on the island: guided architectural tours of the old town, cooking classes where guests can experience cooking traditional Greek dishes and learn more about the culinary history of Greece, pottery classes, wine tastings (Syros has four wineries), hiking, shopping, live music venues, art galleries, day trips to neighbouring islands… The nearest beach is 7 minutes on foot. There are water sports on the other side of the island (about 15 minutes by car). April and May is greener and cooler and suited for hikes in the country side (the north of the island is a nature reserve). September – October is also nice – not green any more but the sea is warm, most of the tourists have left and while it’s still pleasant it’s not so hot outside. What does it feel like? The hotel is in a neoclassical mansion, and so it looks imposing – marble columns, very high ceilings – but because all the decor and art is contemporary it never feels like a museum, but rather like a natural mix of old and new. There’s always something to look at, for instance, even the fire extinguishers are particular. The atmosphere in the hotel is like in a friend’s beautiful home; it’s never uptight, and staff are helpful and friendly rather than formal. It’s an environment to admire as there’s art everywhere, even hidden in the garden, but also one in which you can relax.

Aristide Hotel

Housed in a restored mansion in the historical centre of Hermoupolis, the Aristide combines old-world elegance and contemporary design. The building, with its dramatic marble staircase and Doric columns, is an architectural gem showcasing Greek Neoclassical and Art Deco styles. It was restored by the owners as though their home, and so, from common areas to private bathrooms, guests can enjoy the spaciousness of a grand mansion together with celebrated interior design pieces and a private art collection. In addition to the nine suites, the mansion hosts an art gallery, an artists’ residence and workshop, and two bars. Guests can choose between the garden bar, where they can sip a cocktail in the shade of trees, or the rooftop bar with its open sea views. The hotel is in the aristocratic Vaporia neighbourhood, once the home of shipowners and industrialists. The beach is an eight-minute walk away, as is the town centre and the imposing main square of Hermoupolis.
