Ermoupoli cultural walking tour in the capital of the Cyclades

This ermoupoli cultural walking tour is a gentle city walk through the aristocratic capital of Syros, combining history, neoclassical architecture, maritime heritage and the beauty of the Aegean Sea.

The walk begins near the island’s sports facilities, overlooking the old Telegraph Office. From there, the route introduces visitors to important landmarks of Ermoupoli, beginning with the Lazaretta, the historic quarantine building built in 1840 by the Bavarian architect Wilhelm von Weiler.

Continuing towards the sea, the experience passes by the Tarsanas of Ermoupoli, the oldest shipyard in the Cyclades, where the tradition of wooden shipbuilding has remained alive since the 19th century. The route also reaches the Neorion shipyard, one of the most important industrial landmarks in the Aegean and a key part of Syros’ maritime identity.

Leaving the waterfront behind, the walk continues through the central market and reaches Miaouli Square, where visitors admire the impressive Ermoupoli Town Hall, designed by Ernst Ziller. The tour also includes the Apollo Theater, the Cyclades Labor Center, the Church of Saint Nicholas and the elegant Vaporia district.

The experience concludes by the sea in Vaporia, where there is time to enjoy the atmosphere of the neoclassical mansions and, when conditions allow, a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean.
