Halandriani and Kastri hike in Syros

This Halandriani and Kastri hike in Syros is a 3-hour walking route with archaeological interest, Aegean views and a final swim at a quiet beach.

On the northeastern side of Apano Meria in Syros, overlooking Tinos and Andros, the areas of Halandriani and Kastri form one of the island’s most fascinating destinations for visitors interested in history, nature and archaeology.

Halandriani, built on the plateau of Halandra, hides beneath the modern settlement the traces of an extensive Early Cycladic settlement of the 3rd millennium BC. It is considered one of the most important prehistoric sites in the Cyclades.

The area is also known for the largest cemetery of the Early Bronze Age excavated on Syros. Among the finds, the famous clay vessels decorated with engraved ship representations reveal the close relationship of the ancient inhabitants with the sea.

Following the trail from Halandriani, the route reaches Kastri, the fortified acropolis of the Early Cycladic period. Built on a steep hill with views over the Aegean, Kastri impresses with its walls, horseshoe-shaped towers and stone-built houses connected by narrow stepped paths.

After the archaeological visit, the hike continues through thyme, dry-stone walls and wild Cycladic scenery until reaching a small secluded bay with clear waters and natural beauty. The experience ends with a refreshing swim, open sea views and the calm atmosphere of the Cyclades.
