A working waterfront site in Ermoupoli where Syros’ shipbuilding tradition and maritime know-how are still part of everyday island life.
Karnagio, also known as Tarsanas, is one of the places where the nautical identity of Syros becomes immediately visible. Located on the southern side of Ermoupoli’s port, it is closely connected to the island’s long tradition of building and repairing wooden boats, a craft that continues to define the character of the area.
Developed in the nineteenth century beside the main shipyard zone, the site grew thanks to the shoreline’s gentle slope, which made it suitable for hauling vessels in and out of the water. Today, the area still reflects the continuity of local craftsmanship, combining traditional wooden boatbuilding with the practical rhythm of a modern repair facility.
